History of the Oerlikon Giesserei - the most important milestones

1910 - 1996: The beginnings as a metal foundry

The story begins with the company Nyffenegger & Co. AG, a successful metal foundry in Zurich-Oerlikon. Over the decades, the company became an integral part of the neighborhood. In 1996, the company moved to Binzmühlestrasse - leaving behind a building with great potential.

From 1996: From studio to trendy meeting place

The well-known metal artist Lukas Hofkunst recognizes the potential of the location. What began as a studio soon turned into a workshop, then into living space - and finally into a hotspot for Zurich's subculture. Illegal parties soon make the Giesserei famous throughout the city.

1997 - 1999: From subculture to official address

The entrepreneur Ursin Mirer leads the Giesserei - with the support of the Nyffenegger family (the owners of the building) - from illegality to legality.
In 1999, Fidel Gastro AG is founded by Ursin Mirer, Lukas Hofkunst and Hans Nyffenegger. The restaurant and banqueting offer is professionalized - the foundation stone for today's success is laid.

2000 - 2009: From insider tip to trendy restaurant

  • 2000: The Giesserei wins the Ueli Prager Courage Award (CHF 5,000) and develops into a scene hotspot.
  • 2003: Michael Bellert joins as a partner.
  • 2005: Star designers Alfredo Häberli and Davido Joho realize the visions of the three entrepreneurs. The workshop, the sub-club and a new terrace are built.
  • 2009: The Giesserei celebrates its 13th anniversary - with over 300 guests.

2011 - 2013: Expansion with the Metalli

  • 2011: The former Metalli paint factory at Birchstrasse 106 becomes part of the Giesserei - including the workshop.
  • 2013: A new terrace on the SBB side is opened as part of the Durchmesserlinie - ideal for events and summer parties.

2016: 20 years of the Giesserei

A lavish party with lots of celebrities, champagne and oysters - the evening is hosted by Midi Gottet.

To celebrate, Thomas Meyer (book author, advertiser) writes short stories about the Giesserei.

2018: The library in the Metalli

The library and scenographer on the 1st floor of the Metalli will be taken over and integrated into the Giesserei 's offering.

2021: 25 years Giesserei

To mark the anniversary, a book project is being launched together with Domenico Blass (journalist, copywriter).

25 good reasons to visit Oerlikon - and of course the Giesserei - are presented to guests in book form .

2026: The Giesserei turns 30!
